PLANNING: Drafts of Article 'Copy'

Feature Article Draft

So, is it true that Joanne McIvoy is not your real name?
“[Laughs] Yeah, I changed it back when I was trying to make it in the music industry. My given name was Joanne Rodgers, I guess I just felt that Joanne Rodgers wasn’t a superstar name.”

What is the most memorable moment of your career to date?
“Wow that’s ... that’s a hard one. There have been so many. This past year has been a dream come true for me and it’s hard to pick just one, but I guess that performing at Madison Square Gardens has been pretty memorable for me.”

How did you first start out in music?
“I actually started out singing on YouTube videos. I know that’s how a lot of singers have started out recently but that is how I am here. A record label saw a few of my videos and I like to think they enjoyed them [laughs], I mean how else would I be here today.”

Is music something that you’ve always wanted to do?
“[Laughs] No. I originally wanted to be a drama teacher. I didn’t even take music as a course at school. It wasnt until I went to a concert with friends that I realised that maybe it was something I would want to do?

Who are your role models in the music industry?
“ I have so many. There are so many amazing artists that I look up to and aspire to be, and if I am able to ever be as talented as them then I will be very happy.”

Is it true that Sam Smith has taken a shine to you?
“Yeah, but not in that kind of way [laughs]. He saw a music video of mine and called me up to tell me how he felt about it. He is a really sweet guy.”

Are there any artist that you would love to do a collaboration with?
“I would love to sing a song with Katy Perry, she has been one of my idols for like ever [laughs]. I grew up listening to her songs.
You were voted for a few American Music Awards this year, tell us about your experience at the award show.
“It was an incredible experience. To be nominated for those awards alongside amazing and talented artist like that was beyond believable for me. And to actually have won the awards, well it was a night that I will never in my life forget. As well as winning the awards i was nominated for I was also able to sing alongside artists like Ed Sheeran and Sheppard. Both of them are such great singers and to have been given the opportunity to sing with them was something that I never imagined would have happened to me. In a year I went from singing on videos to being able to write my own songs and sing them on a stage for people who enjoy them. It is a dream come true.”

Final question. What are your plans for the future?

“That’s easy [laughs]. Continue to make music for the people who enjoy listening to it. Continue to make people happy in the way that I know best.”

PLANNING: Feature Artist.

Feature Artist

Joanne is a 19 year old British artist who has recently been signed to a record label after being spotted on YouTube. Her videos gathered the attention of millions of people. After stealing the hearts of so many people, she decided to regularly upload videos of her singing songs, some from her current artists and some of her own, earning her videos to go viral. After gaining internet stardom, she drew the attention of a rep from the record label who, after a single studio session, signed her straight away.

Her image is casual, yet in a way that looks stylish and in with current fashion. Due to her age, she is an attractive and youthful teenage which means that she is relatable to many people.

Masthead:
The masthead will be the same for all magazines, this will be to keep the magazine consistent, unless it is some kind of special edition and even then the masthead will still be recognisable as it usually is. It will be placed at the top of the page in the right hand corner.
The masthead for my magazine will use the Century Gothic font. This will be used for any text inside the magazine as well.

The layout of my magazine will be rather simple however; I hope that it will still be as effective. The layout will stay the same throughout the magazine so it is easily recognisable by readers.

PLANNING: Initial Ideas.

Initial Ideas

Idea 1:

Indie/Pop Magazine:

Gender - Male/Female
Age - 13 to 25
Reader Interests - They will be interested in indie/pop genre, fashion based around the genre, music currently in the charts and films/TV.
Similar Artists - Sheppard/Of Monsters and Men/Imagine Dragons/Fun./Bastille
Colour Scheme - Red, White and Black

The strengths with this indie/pop magazine idea is that it has a wide age range, which is 13-25 year olds, so it will be able to draw in a slightly bigger audience than something, for example, is only aimed at teenagers. As well as being an indie music magazine it will also feature other genres such as pop, and by doing this it makes the target audience for this slightly larger, however it will mainly focus on the indie pop genre. This magazine will also be for both male and females so it isn't gender specific and will be available to anyone wanting to read it.

Idea 2:

Rock Magazine:

Gender - Male
Age - 13 to 20
Reader Interests - They will be interested in rock fashion, current rock chart music.
Similar Artists - Fall Out Boy/Bring Me The Horizon/You Me At Six
Colour Scheme - Red, Yellow and Black

The strengths of this rock magazine is that it will have its own distinctive look instead of the modern look that most magazines have. It will also include many pictures from a variety of gigs that will give people an insight as to what a concert is like and will hopefully persuade them to want go.

Idea 3:

Pop Magazine:

Gender - Female
Age - 12 to 18
Reader Interests - They will be interested in fashion, chart music, TV and films and celebrity gossip.
Similar Artists - Beyonce/Katy Perry/Nicki Minaj/Sam Smith
Colour Scheme - Black and Orange

The strengths of this pop magazine idea is that it will be suitable for the teenage female audience. Also, seeing as this magazine includes articles about the current fashion that the artists are wearing and this will appeal to the teenage target audience because fashion is something that they care about.

Idea 4:

Indie/Alternative Magazine:

Gender - Male/Female
Age - 13 to 25
Reader Interests - They will be interested in fashion/media such as film and TV as well as general thing.
Similar Artists - George Ezra/Ed Sheeran/The 1975/Coldplay
Colour Scheme - Brown and Blue

The strengths of this indie alternative magazine is that, like idea 1, it has an open age range so it will appeal to older fans and not just teenagers. This magazine will also appeal to audiences as it is about more than just music, it will include other things that interest them such as TV and film. By having this it will make for a larger audience.

Name and Masthead Design:

  • Chords:

I like this name because it is a term used in music and seeing as it is a music magazine, the name fits really well with the product that I am creating.

  • In Stereo:
I like this name because it is unique and there aren't any music magazines out there with this name and I believe that it will stand out to audiences.

  • Notes:
I like this name because, like Chords, it is a musical term and fits with what I am trying to create. However, this name isn't very interesting and audiences may find this boring.

  • Star Avenue:
I like this name as it has an American feel to it and seeing as that is where most music artists are based, I felt that it made sense to call it this. It is also a unique name however, people may find this as too long a name for a music magazine.

  • Unplugged:
I really liked this name as it relates to music, however this name doesn't really fit the genre of my music magazines. As well as that, Unplugged is a really popular name so it wont be unique and stand out to people.

    • This feature article uses all the main colours that usually represent Q magazine. By using these traditional Q colours, the images used here are not overpowered.
    • The big main image of Cheryl Cole makes it very clear to the audience just who this feature article is based on and by having this image full page may also be used as a poster by fans of the artists.
